The Biggest Loser: Couples: January 2008 Archives
This week's episode of The Biggest Loser surprisingly picks up back at the villa instead of the elimination room. The yellow team of Paul and Kelly were talking about how they had to send pink home when the purple team of Maggie and Jenn entered their room upset. They didn't appreciate Paul and Kelly telling them that they haven't been working hard enough. Paul and Kelly tried to explain they were talking about them concerning being below the yellow line alot but yellow wasn't having any of it. Forget about alliances because they're going at it alone now.
The next morning, Jill met with the yellow team who were still in their room being depressed over having to vote out the pink team. They told Jill that everybody will be competing as individuals now but yet still as mini-teams. Don't worry, it'll make sense in a moment. Bob goes outside to the others who are gathered around the pool and sees that the pink team is gone. The purple team went off telling Bob what the yellow team said about their not working hard enough but Bob basically told them that they needed to step up and not worry about what people are saying. Booyah!
After Brittany and Jillian did a little bonding over Brittany's food issues, it was time for a challenge. Everybody was gathered in a mall in front of two giant escalators. Ali told them that tonight's challenge was so important that it could make the difference between making it all the way to the end and going home early. As a matter of fact, it was so important that the trainers would be there with them for the challenge. After Bob and Jillian entered, Alison told them that the first person to run up the escalators 10 times would win. There would be only two people competing and the person who wins gets to pick which teams they'll be training with -- black team or blue team. Half of the teams will become the new black team and train with Jillian while the others would be the new team with Bob. Who are the two people competing? Of course, it's Bob and Jillian!
Sadly, it really wasn't much of a challenge. I don't know what was going on with Jillian but she was nowhere even close to winning this one. Bob lapped her quite easily and was the first one to get up the escalator 10 times. She only managed 7 in that amount of time. Because Bob won, he was able to select the three teams he wanted to make up his new blue team. He chose the orange team first (Dan and Jackie) and then the black (Jay and Mark) and finished up with the gray (Roger and Trent). The whole time this was going on, Jillian was literally bawling like a little baby. Perhaps she was PMSing or something. So Jillian was stuck with the blue (Brittany and Bernie), purple (Maggie and Jenn), and yellow (Paul and Kelly) teams. I have a bad feeling about this.
Alison then told everybody that it was time to put the new teams to a test. That meant it was time for another challenge! After the teams got over their shock and disappointment in having to actually do something that evening, Alison told them that each team would get on the escalator and stay on it for as long as they could. The team with the last player on the escalator wins $10,000 to split amongst themselves. Paul and Trent were the first two out of the challenge. Bob and Jillian had told them to get off because of their messed up knees. Everybody else was a-steppin'. Kelly and Jenn from the black team were the first two out after that. Then Jackie and Roger from the blue team were out. It was three against three but then Maggie and Bernie from the black team were eliminated leaving only Brittany for the black team. She fought hard to stay on but after 20 minutes (whew!) she was eliminated. The new blue team won!
Two days later it was time for a temptation challenge. Both of the teams were gathered and told that the average American drinks 577 cans of soda per year which equates to 50 pounds of sugar. To drive home how much sugar that actually was, Alison dumped a big bucket of the sweet granules into a giant bin. Whoa, that is a lot of sugar! Before the teams were 240 cups of different colors of soda. One of the cups has a star on the bottom. Whoever drink the cup with the star on it would get to pick one person from the other team and make their weight not count at the next weigh-in. The blue team talked it over and decided to wait and see if the black team would fall for the temptation. However, the black team didn't succumb. Alison tried to tempt them even more telling them the starred cup wasn't with the orange or grape sodas but neither team fell for it.
After the last chance workouts, it was time for the weigh-in. The competition had started with ten teams in multiple colors but now there were only two teams and two colors. For the first time this season, one person will have to say goodbye to their partner. Each person would be weighing solo this time around and the blue team as the first to go. Jay lost 3 pounds, Mark lost 5 pounds, Trent lost 9 pounds, Roger lost 10 pounds, Jackie lost 8 pounds, and Dan lost 13 pounds. The blue team collectively lost 50 pounds and 3.00% of their body weight.
Jenn began the weigh-in for the black team. She lost 6 pounds, Maggie lost 7 pounds, Bernie lost 5 pounds, Brittany lost 2 pounds, Kelly lost no pounds (!!!), and Paul gained 3 pounds. Kelly was really upset at not losing any weight and everybody was shocked at Paul's weight gain. (Jillian told both of them that they'd be working on their food issues next week.) The black team lost a total of 17 pounds and just 1.22% of their body weight.
Dan from the blue team is the new BL Player of the Week while somebody from the black team would be leaving this week. It wouldn't be Maggie though because she lost the biggest percentage of weight. The black team now had one hour to make their decision. Back at the house, the purple team consoled the yellow team. That was interesting considering how ticked off they were at them at the beginning of the week. Jenn told Brittany she was worried about going home but Brittany told her to just chill. Kelly asked Brittany and Bernie to keep them but if they had to vote one of them out to vote her out over Paul because he needed to be there more than she did.
Who would be left without their companion? At the elimination ceremony, Kelly and Paul both voted for Jenn to go home. Maggie and Jenn both voted for Kelly to go home. It was all tied up and would come down to how Brittany and Bernie voted. Brittany voted for Jenn and then Bernie voted for Jenn. Jen will be leaving this week. She began crying and Maggie told her that she's proud of her. Jenn told everybody to keep on fighting and then left the room. Since leaving the show, Jenn has continued with her weight loss. She now weighs 201 pounds for a total weight loss of 53 pounds.
Next week, what happens at the weigh-in leads to the most shocking elimination yet (more tomfoolery perhaps?). Even more interesting, videos from home reveal true hidden feelings for an ex-husband and wife (will Paul and Kelly get back to together?). I can't wait!
What did you think about this week's episode? Are you like me and think Bob's blue team is going to absolutely steamroll Jillian's team? I just don't want Brittany, Bernie, Paul, or Kelly to go home. They're my favorites!
Picking up from last week's cliffhanger on The Biggest Loser, Alison told the teams that they would have one hour to decide which other team to vote off. She told them to go off and discuss it only with their teammate and to come back and join her in the elimination room at the end of the hour. When the teams were reassembled the votes were: yellow team voted for the black team; blue for black; purple for yellow; black for yellow; gray for purple; orange for purple; and then it was time for the pink team to vote. They said they were voting purely for strategic purposes and chose to vote out the yellow team.
Kelly from the yellow team cried and basically began her goodbye speech when Alison told everybody the shocking news. The yellow team would not be going home right now! For this week only, it would be the other six teams competing against the yellow team both in the challenges and at the weigh-in. How would that work? At the weigh-in, if the yellow's percentage of weight loss was greater than the total percentage of weight loss of the other six teams then they would get to choose the team that would be going home that week. If the yellow team's percentage of weight loss was lower than the other teams combined percentage, then the yellow team would be leaving immediately after the weigh-in. One advantage the yellow team did get though was the ability to choose either Bob or Jillian to train with just them for the entire week. Of course, they chose Jillian so the other teams would be working with Bob.
Later that night, the other six teams were gathered around and talking about what had just happened. They thought they had a pretty good chance and new they would have to work together as one big team this week. Meanwhile, the Paul and Kelly were talking in their room and Kelly was ticked that everybody considered them a threat. Paul thought it was a positive and declared that he was ready to battle. He put on a kung fu shirt he hadn't fit into in ages and made a few karate moves (while NBC played hilarious kung fu sound effects in the background).
The next day, the yellow team met with Alison for being the Team of the Week. They would have the same chance as the orange team did last week at choosing either a Gameplay, Luxury, or Family envelope. Paul told Kelly that he absolutely wanted them to pick the Gameplay envelope while Kelly really wanted to choose Luxury or Family instead. She brought up a compromise in that they would choose Gameplay this time around but next time they would choose Family. He agreed and they opened the Gameplay envelope: take two additional pounds off at the weigh-in of their choice. Well, we know which weigh-in they'll use it at!
Back on campus, the trainers are informed by the other six teams (who are just sitting around outside) about what happened (white voted out and the six against one twist with the yellow team). Jillian felt a little pressure being chosen as yellow's trainer because while working them out so they could win it also meant that she'd be working against the other teams at the same time. When Jillian joined the yellow team upstairs, she told them not to let the anger fuel them and to look long-term at things so that they wouldn't alienate the others. But later, when everybody was in the gym working out, the yellow team didn't tell the other teams which envelope they chose when they were asked.
At this week's all against one challenge, Alison told the now two teams that they would have to cross balance beams that were placed over the pool, grab a peg from the other side, and then cross back over the beam again to put the peg in their team's board. Every player must cross the beam and get at least one peg and the first team that filled their board would win letters from home. Paul started out first for the yellow team and Mark for the other team. Paul smoked him and everybody else in the competition. Actually, Paul went 11 straight times across that beam getting their pegs and Kelly went for the final peg and they won! The yellow team decided to forgo their letters and instead wanted everybody else to get their letters. The yellow team was happy they won and the other team was happy about their letters. Such a happy little place!
While walking and running on the track later, the blue team hatched up a plan to throw the weigh-in so that they could eliminate the black team. They told the purple and orange teams what they wanted to do and all of them decided they would chug a bunch of water right before their weigh-in. Later, after Bob found out his team lost, he told them that the yellow team giving them the letters instead was all gameplay. He told his team that he expects big numbers from them this week and doesn't want to look like an idiot at the weigh-in. If anybody had anything up their sleeve, he wanted them to tell him so that at least he wasn't surprised.
After the sappy "everybody reads their letter" segment, it was time for the weigh-in. Alison announced that the yellow team had decided to use their 2-pound reward at this weigh-in (the others didn't look too happy). Every other team besides the yellow team would weigh first and then the average percentage of weight loss would be determined. The team in that big team that lost the highest percentage would win immunity and not be eligible to be voted out that evening. The yellow looked mighty shocked at that!
The results of the first team's weigh-in was: Bette-Sue and Ali lost a combined 15 pounds (3.43%); Roger and Trent lost 25 pounds (3.48%); Bernie and Brittany lost a scant 9 pounds (2.00%); Jay and Mark lost 24 pounds (4.64%); Maggie and Jenn lost just 10 pounds (2.19%); and Dan and Jackie lost a miniscule 3 pounds (0.62%). Bob was completely shocked at the blue and orange team's weight loss. Mark (black team) realized that there was some gameplay going on and promised there would be consequences for it later. The group's average percentage of weight loss was 2.81%.
Because of the yellow team's 2-pound advantage, they would have to lose 12 pounds combined to win the weigh-in. Paul lost 9 pounds and Kelly lost 8 pounds for a combined total of 17 pounds and 3.39%. That made them the winner and they alone would be choosing a team to go home within the hour.
Paul and Kelly weren't sure what to do because they had wanted to vote out the black team but they had won immunity at the weigh-in for losing the biggest percentage of weight. They eventually narrow it down to either voting out the purple team (because they've been on the bottom of the results for the last couple of weeks) or the pink team (because the pinks voted at the beginning to vote them out). The yellow team decided to go have a talk with the pink and purple teams to help make their decision.
At the elimination ceremony, Kelly did all the talking for the yellow team. She realized she was crushing a dream and on and on and on. Finally, Bette-Sue told her to just state their decision. Paul and Kelly voted for the pink team to go home. Bette-Sue and Ali were both mad about it saying that they're being unjustly sent home. Bette-Sue said that if people are going to play the game then play the game outright and stop being so cowardly about it. The pinks hugged some of the teams (not the yellow) and walked out of the elimination room. Alison then gave the remaining teams a bit of shocking news -- starting next week there would be no more eliminating teams. They would begin single person eliminations instead. Whoa!
Back at home, the pink team said that they are grateful for the show because it has brought them closer together as a mother and daughter. Bette-Sue has lost a total of 49 pounds and Ali has lost a total of 61 pounds. Ali looks really great and said she's been given her life back. Good for her!
In the preview for next week, Alison says that one of them will have to say goodbye to their partner while Jillian is brought to tears.
It looks like it's going to be another great show next week! What did you think about this week's episode? How did you like this little twist? Did you find the kung fu sound effects for Paul as hilarious as I did?
The Biggest Loser began with a little surprise twist this week. For the first time ever, the show awarded the team that lost the biggest percentage of weight in the previous week with the title "Team of the Week". Also, that team was given the chance to earn a reward for themselves. Dan & Jackie loved hearing that news from Alison Sweeney. What would they have to do to earn it though? They would have to hike to the top of the big hill on campus and choose one of three envelopes labeled Luxury, Family, or Gameplay. After completing the hike, they ultimately chose the Gameplay envelope which gave their team the ability to cast two votes at the next elimination.
When they returned back to the campus, they told the other teams what they received. Then everybody began working out like maniacs. Bob was especially pushing Bette-Sue (in a good way) by making her walk a mile with 20-pound weights after an already extensive workout in the gym. She didn't think she'd be able to do it but do it she did. Bette-Sue collapsed on the grass afterward but was really proud of herself -- especially when she realized that those 20 pounds she carried on the track equaled weight that she'd already lost.
While Neil was barely working out, Jillian took Ali (Bette-Sue's daughter) aside and talked to her about why she was fat. Ali broken down telling Jillian that she uses the weight as a way to protect herself. See, her parents divorced when she was little and it seems her mom wasn't around a whole lot for her sister and herself. Ali uses the weight as the excuse to give herself when people would leave her in her life. Jillian thought it would be a good thing if Ali tried to gather the strength to talk to her mom about it at some point so that she could get past this crutch and keep the weight off permanently instead of gaining it back again for protection.
At the challenge, Alison told the teams that it would test alliances between the teams and did it ever! One member from each team would have to race through a huge pit of water, grab a medicine ball, and then race back through the water and put the ball in another team's rack. Teams could choose to gang up on other teams or spread the balls around. Once one team's rack was filled, that team would be eliminated. The last team whose rack hadn't been filled wins. Winning would be huge in this one because that team would win immunity at the next weigh-in. The black team (brothers) were really worried about being eliminated since they had won the two previous challenges so they aligned with the pink (mother/daughter) and gray (football players) teams.
Once the challenge started, it was quickly apparent that many of the teams were going after the orange (mother/son) team first because they had two votes in the next elimination. The orange team was indeed the first team eliminated with the white (newlyweds) team and black team right behind them. Mark & Jay (black team) got into a heated argument after being eliminated because Mark told Bernie (blue) to go ahead and put the ball in their rack and eliminate them. Jay didn't appreciate that Mark would purposefully get them eliminated and, even though Mark tried to explain to Jay that it didn't matter because the next person was going to fill their rack, Jay blew up at Mark. The competition continued with the yellow (divorced couple) team and pink team being eliminated next. It was now down to the gray, purple (friends), and blue teams. The purple took out the blue, the gray took out the purple, and the gray team won immunity!
Back at the campus, Amanda tried to talk to Neill about how he's being perceived as lazy by the other teams. She's worried about them being voted out and asks him to step it up but he was barely even acknowledging her existence. The orange team went to work out right after the challenge while the others were lounging around and talking. While that was going on, Jay told his brother that the other teams were talking about their fight they had at the challenge. Mark became ticked that the other teams didn't understand their brotherly relationship and later apologized to everybody after everybody had been gathered up. Jackie (orange team) thought this whole situation smacked of gameplay and began getting into it with Mark. Then Bette-Sue inserted herself in all of it and it became a big argument concerning hurt feelings about being ganged up on in the challenge. The whole thing was pretty stupid if you ask me.
Later, the teams were back in the gym and working out. Neil was being his "hardly doing anything" self as usual and Jillian called him out on it. She told him if he touched the handle on the treadmill again that she'd make the other teams work out for five more minutes. Of course, he couldn't do it and leaned on the treadmill several more times which began to really aggravate the other teams. One of the brothers even said something about going over there and smacking him. That was hilarious!
After the workout, Jillian talked to Bette-Sue about the conversation she'd had with her daughter earlier. She told Bette-Sue that Ali felt that she couldn't go to her and talk to her and think it would be best if they tried to talk and get over some of the things in their past. Jillian went to get Ali and stayed with them (at Ali's request) as they talked. Ali told her mother that she doesn't want to be unhappy anymore and wants to have somebody there for her. Bette-Sue told Ali that she had no idea that she felt so alone and admitted to her behavior in the past (leaving the girls alone as kids). Eventually, both were crying and apologizing and hugging. I even shed a tear or two here myself.
At the weigh-in, the gray team went first since they won immunity in the challenge. Roger & Trent lost 22 pounds (2.97%) and then were promptly removed from the board because of their immunity leaving the remaining seven teams to duke it out. Dan & Jackie (orange) lost 19 pounds (3.80%), Maggie & Jenn (purple) lost 10 pounds (2.14%), Jay & Mark (black) lost 19 pounds (3.54%), and Bette-Sue and Ali (orange) lost 14 pounds (3.10%). Bernie & Brittany (blue) lost 20 pounds (4.25%), Neill & Amanda (white) lost 11 pounds (2.25%), and Paul & Kelly (yellow) lost 23 pounds (4.26%). Yay! I'm so happy for the yellow team. Now they'll be next week's Biggest Loser Team of the Week. These results also put the white and purple teams below the yellow line so it'll be one of them going home.
After the weigh-in, the purple told everybody that they've been working hard the whole time. Amanda (white) basically begged everybody to not vote them off just because of her husband. You know, I couldn't stand the way she tried to appeal to everybody. Girl, this is a competition and if your husband is a lazy ass then too bad. Yeah, you're working hard but you surely can't expect everybody to keep you around because they feel sorry you're stuck with a bum. Anyway....
The votes were quick and swift at the elimination ceremony. Try to guess who was voted out? Yep, the white team. It's about time! I loved how Neill told everybody that his wife could turn on the tears better than him and that's why she did all of the begging before. Just wow. Then he turned around and said that he hated being seen as a slacker. Well hello! You are! So off they walked into the sunset.
Before the other teams left though, Alison told them that they'd be entering a new phase and would have to make an important decision: If they could vote off one more team right now, who would it be? And that was our cliffhanger. Yeah, tell me about it.
Back at home, Neill & Amanda have continued to lose weight. She's obviously been working harder than he has as she's lost one more pound (24) than he has (23) since they've been home. I just can't stand that guy. I feel for her.
Next week, a shocking twist pits six teams against one team (yellow perhaps?). And to continue on their weight loss journey, they'll have to depend on each other.
It looks to be an interesting show next week and I can't wait. What did you think about this week's episode? Were you happy like I was that Neill went home? What did you make of Bette-Sue and Ali mending their relationship? What do you think goes on next week?
They didn't keep us waiting for long to find out how Bob and Jillian would be coupled on this week's The Biggest Loser: Couples did they? Forget about each team choosing their trainer or getting stuck with one they didn't want: All of them would be trained by both trainers now. That seemed to have been met with mixed emotion. The ones that didn't like it as much were the ones that had chosen Bob and I found that hilarious!
Their first workout with both trainers was incredibly intense. Poor Bette-Sue actually slip-slided off her treadmill and wound up on her face. It looked like it really hurt but she got up and finished the workout. Good for her! After the workout, Alison met with them inside and told them that they would have to confront the Hall of Truth tonight. Basically, each team was sent into a room where they had to listen to a pre-show video of themselves carry on about how much and what they liked to eat. As their video played, different facts (calories, fat grams, yearly weight gain from eating that food, etc) about those foods would display on the screen. It shocked all of them but it especially shocked the brown team of Curtis & Mallory. They began crying from the experience and vowed to get healthy.
At a workout the next day, Neill was lollygagging around and working out nowhere near the level of his wife Amanda. Jillian came in and called him out on it. She told him that he would have to walk one hour on the treadmill or nobody else would get to leave the gym. He balked and said he was tired but finally got his ass in gear.
Later, it was time for a challenge that would involve the winner getting a couple of calling cards that would allow them to call home. Each team had to sit on a giant steel seesaw and seesaw up and down 100 times. The team that did it the fastest won the calling cards. Almost as soon as the challenge started, Trent (gray team) dropped out because of his knee. The black team (the brothers) took an early lead and never gave it up. They won again! The blue (strangers) and brown teams were close and decided to keep going to get their 100 anyway. By the way, the white team with lazy Neill only had 72.
Alison then told the brothers that in addition to winning calling cards for themselves, they could award three more sets of cards to whichever teams they wanted. Later, they decided to choose Trent & Roger (gray team) along with Curtis & Mallory (brown) and Amanda & Neill (white). They basically chose based on who had kids which I thought was kind of lame. I was hoping they would have chosen based on who worked the hardest in the challenge.
After the challenge it was back to the gym for another workout. Lazy Neill wanted to stop in the middle of his workout and use his calling card. This caused Jillian to get upset at him (yet again) and they wound up taking it outside this time. He told her that he didn't expect to have to do all of this for the show and she told him that thousands of people would love to be in his shoes and to basically suck it up. He then gathered his bollocks and went back to working out.
Next, we saw the sappy "phone home" segment. You gotta wonder who was making these little children say the things they said and most of the calls were awfully stilted (due to editing I'm sure). At least Neill seemed to have changed his attitude after his call home. I wonder how long that will last!
It was then time for a temptation challenge. Alison asked the teams to split up and go into separate rooms. Each room was told that each person would have four minutes to eat as much of the feast that had been placed outside as they wanted. They didn't have to eat anything though. What's the payoff? The team (that's now divided) that eats the most calories wins $5,000. The people in the first room went out and sniffed at all of the food but didn't eat a single thing. Room two was a different story. Paul (yellow team) told them that he still had 1,000 extra calories for the day and that he'd be eating -- and he did. That caused Mark (black team) to decide to eat also and even Mallory (brown team) chose to eat a little thing of chocolate candies.
When the partners were reunited, Alison revealed who ate and how much calories they consumed. Mallory's candies were worth 210 calories, Paul ate 912 calories worth, and Mark ate 925 calories worth. The black team won the $5,000. Paul ate all of them calories for nothing! Needless to say, Kelly wasn't every happy with him. And when Bob and Jillian found out about the three of them eating? They weren't very happy trainers.
At the weigh-in, Alison told the couples that the elimination this week would take place again within one hour. (I hope they keep that up in future seasons!) The weight loss and percentage was: Roger & Trent (gray) lost 9 pounds (1.20%); Bernie & Brittany (blue) lost 6 pounds (1.26%); Paul & Kelly (yellow) lost 4 pounds (0.74%); Jay & Mark (black) lost 12 pounds (2.19%); and Maggie & Jenn (purple) lost 4 pounds (0.85%). Bette-Sue & Ali (pink) lost 9 pounds (1.96%); Dan & Jackie (orange) lost 16 pounds (3.10%); Curtis & Mallory (brown) lost 2 pounds (0.36%); and Neill & Amanda (white) lost 6 pounds (1.21%). It would be either the yellow or the brown team going home since they lost the least percentage of weight.
Voting turned out to be a nailbiter. Yellow, brown, yellow, yellow, brown, brown, brown! Awww, Mallory & Curtis are the team voted out. That sucks because I really liked them but it's also good because I like the yellow team more. Curtis wished everybody the best and said they'd continue their work back at home.
And they have! Curtis has lost 58 pounds since leaving the show and Mallory has lost 20. They're working out and eating healthy and looking really good! I can't wait to see them at the finale.
Next week, the disappointing weigh-ins of tonight will put relationships to the test and the mother/daughter team (pink) get a second chance at their relationship. Hmmmm.
So what did you think about this week's episode? I seriously would have loved to see the white team go home (sorry Amanda) instead of the brown team. I hope Neill and his lazy ass goes home soon!
Guess what? The Biggest Loser: Couples edition started up this week and I think I'm going to like this one even more than the regular TBL Why is that? Well, except for one team, the couples have known each other many many years and that will provide for more personal drama in the show. I definitely wouldn't mind seeing more drama on this show!
In this premiere episode, we met each of the teams and learned the relationship they had with each other. The teams are: Bette-Sue & Ali (mother/daughter), Curtis & Mallory (married couple), Maggie & Jen (friends and fat camp counselors), Neill & Amanda (newlyweds), Paul & Kelly (divorced couple), Lynn & Jenni (father/daughter), Jackie & Dan (mother/son), Jay & Mark (brothers), Roger & Trent (former football teammates), and finally Brittany & Bernie (strangers to each other and picked from The Biggest Loser Club online).
After the introductions, they had their first challenge of the season and it's one we've come to know and love. They would have to race up a hill, touch their team flag, and race back down. The twist this time was that they could pick their own trainer -- either Bob or Jillian (no Kim this season). The problem was that each trainer would only train five teams so if a team wanted a specific trainer, they'd better hurry their butts up that hill and get back down before that trainer's five slots had already been filled.
The brothers (Jay & Mark) were the first up the hill and the first down the hill with Bernie & Brittany (strangers) close behind the whole time. The brothers chose Jillian as their trainer while Bernie & Brittany chose Bob. Roger & Trent finished third and chose Jillian, Curtis & Mallory chose Jillian, and Jackie & Dan chose Bob. The newlyweds finished sixth and chose Jillian while Maggie & Jen finished seventh and chose Jillian also. That's it for Jillian. Everybody else would be getting Bob. Paul & Kelly finished in eighth, Lynn & Jennifer finished in ninth, and Bette-Sue and Ali finished in last place. Bette-Sue was frustrated and embarrassed by coming in last and felt like she let her daughter down. They'd also wanted Jillian as their trainer and were frustrated at that also.
Back inside and still on the campus for this season, it was time for Bob and Jillian to assign each of their teams a color. Bob chose his signature blue for Bernie & Brittany while Jill chose her fierce black for the brothers, Jay & Mark. After that, it was time for everybody's first weigh-in.
This season, instead of having the single scale in front of everybody, there will be a pair of scales. The combined weight loss percentage from each team (not each person) would determine who would be slipping below the yellow line and be in danger of going home. Maggie (239) & Jenn (254) weighed a combined 493 pounds, Jay (293) & Mark (285) combined for 578 pounds, Curtis (381) and Mallory (217) weighed 598, Bette-Sue (261) & Ali (234) weighed 495 pounds, Jackie (246) & Dan (310) weighed 556 pounds, Lynn (409) & Jenni (267) weighed 676 pounds, Neill (317) & Amanda (204) weighed 521 pounds, Paul (303) & Kelly (271) weighed 574 pounds, and Roger (363) & Trent (436) weighed a whopping combined 799 pounds. Trent now holds the record for being equal to the heaviest contestant to have ever been on the show.
At their first workout sessions, they realized true physical pain. Neill kept giving up and quitting which frustrated Jillian while Bob was dealing with Paul's falling down and Bette-Sue's "mock" complaining the entire time. Jillian told us that she doesn't like the team aspect this season very much because they have their enablers with them (but aren't they there to learn how to stop that Jillian?). After telling us that, she proceeded to install a Brita water filter with Neill (nice and awkward product placement NBC!). Later, the teams all met up at the local hospital morgue where the show's physician told them how much danger they were in due to their poor physical health. High blood pressure, sleep apnea, fatty livers, and fertility problems were the specialty of the day.
It was now time for their first "real" challenge. Each team would have to drag a hot air balloon (in their team's color) one lap around a course. The first team to cross the finish line would get to add an additional two pounds to their team's combined weight loss at the next weigh-in. Not all of the news was so great though. Alison told the teams that if they were the last team to cross the finish line they would have two pounds subtracted from their team's combined weight loss at the weigh-in. Bette-Sue didn't like hearing about that very much!
As it was in the hill challenge, the brothers in black led the way around the course and finished in first. The brown team (Curtis & Mallory) had held down second place most of the lap but towards the end, Bernie & Brittany (blue) began running and passed them up to finish in second place. Maggie & Jenn (purple) were the last team to finish and would have to deal with consequences of having two pounds deducted from their combined weight loss. Both of them were embarrassed at how poorly they did while being some of the youngest contestants on the show.
During workouts later on, Jenni & her dad Lynn wound up getting into it. Jenni was on the treadmill working out and feeling frustrated that her dad wasn't there working out with her and everybody else. The show kept shooting to him sitting and reading which was funny but sad. Jenni finally stewed long enough and left to go try and convince him to just work out for thirty minutes. He wasn't having none of it though. He complained about having blisters on his feet, how his sixty-year-old body couldn't handle it, how he's tired, etc. She went back to the gym in tears while he went to bed.
To Lynn's credit (I guess), he did wake up early the next morning and went and worked out. Bernie returned from the hospital in time for the teams' last chance workouts. He'd been admitted because he couldn't keep food down and they wanted to run some tests. He just did a light workout on the treadmill while Brittany worried about how serious he really was about being committed to their new team.
It was now time for the team's first weigh-in since beginning their new diet and workout regimens. Before weighing in though, Alison told them that instead of having 24 hours to decide which team to eliminate they would only have one hour to decide. That was a shock to them!
The yellow team (Paul & Kelly) weighed first. He lost 17 lbs and she lost 13 lbs for a combined loss of 30 lbs (5.23%). The black team (Jay & Mark) weighed next. Jay lost 13 lbs and Mark lost 17 lbs for a combined loss of 30 lbs. But, because they were the winners of the balloon challenge, they were able to add another 2 lbs. Their new weight loss was a combined 32 lbs (5.54%). The brown team (Curtis & Mallory) were the next team up to the scales. He lost 22 lbs and she lost 14 lbs for a combined loss of 36 lbs (6.02%). The gray team (Roger & Trent) were the next to weigh in. Roger lost 20 lbs and Trent lost 29 lbs for a combined loss of 49 lbs (6.13%). The orange team (Jackie & Dan) were the fifth team to weigh in. She lost 15 lbs and he lost 25 lbs for a combined loss of 40 lbs (7.19%).
The green team (Lynn & Jenni) weighed next. Lynn lost 19 lbs while his daughter only lost 7 lbs for a combined loss of 26 lbs (3.85%). The white team (Neill & Amanda) were next on the scales. He lost 13 lbs and she lost 14 lbs for a combined loss of 27 lbs (5.18%). The purple team (Maggie & Jenn) were the eighth team to weigh in. Maggie lost 10 lbs and Jenn lost 12 lbs for a combined weight loss of 22 lbs. However, they were the last place team in the balloon challenge so had to suffer a two-pound penalty. Their adjusted combined weight loss was 20 lbs (4.06%). The pink team (Bette-Sue & Ali) were the next-to-last team to weigh in. Bette-Sue lost 16 lbs and Ali lost 19 lbs for a combined weight loss of 35 lbs (7.07%). (They were pleasantly surprised at this!) The last team to weigh in was the blue team (Bernie & Brittany). He lost 17 lbs and she lost 10 lbs for a combined loss of 27 lbs (5.36%).
The mother/son team of Jackie & Dan lost the most percentage of weight while the green and purple teams were below the yellow line. It would be either the father/daughter team of Lynn & Jenni or the friends team of Maggie & Jenn leaving that night. Maggie & Jenn begged the other teams to let them stay because they wanted to be there unlike somebody else (referring to Lynn). Jenni pleaded with the others to not punish her just because of how her dad had been behaving. Her dad definitely seemed like an ass too! Later when she was talking to him, she begged him to change his attitude because she really wanted to stay. He then threw the fact that she only lost 7 pounds while he lost 19 pounds up in her face. That ticked me off just watching it.
In the end though, Jenni's pleas weren't enough and they were the team eliminated. Jenni cried and told the others that she hopes her dad continues losing at home. Lynn blankly told everybody that he would keep up the weight loss and would see everybody at the finale. For their home checkups, we found out that six weeks after leaving the campus Jenni has lost an additional 20 lbs. Her father has lost 30 lbs himself (even though he hasn't been exercising the way he should).
Next week, the newlyweds seem to have a hard time while Bob & Jillian join forces to become the ultimate couple. Bob even says they're the dynamic duo. Hmmm, not sure what's up with that but it probably has something to do with some kind of competition where they'll be competing right along with the other teams for reward or punishment.
So what did you think about this first episode of The Biggest Loser: Couples? Do you think you're going to like this season any more than the other seasons? Do you have any favorite couples so far? What about couples you don't particularly care for?
