How Do You Watch Your News?
How do you watch your news? I'm not talking about the celebrity fluff found on E! or the latest sports scores from ESPN either. What I'm referring to is our national news. Do you get it from the little bit that's shown on your local morning and evening news programs or do you also watch the half-hour nightly news from the big networks? Are you a CNN or FOX News person? And when was the last time you went online to watch your news?
Last week, I wrapped up a series about watching TV online but I purposely neglected the news angle. Why? Because when it comes to mainstream news, the networks aren't doing too well. According to this article from The Wall Street Journal, just 7.6 million tuned in to watch Charlie Gibson give them the news of the day. The numbers were even lower for the other network stalwarts.
12.2 million tuned in to watch the finale of Lost this season and and shows such as Hell's Kitchen and So You Think You Can Dance plug along each week with around 9 million viewers. The fact that news programming isn't as robust as the popular prime time programming isn't shocking. Most people, myself included, would rather tune in to Grey's Anatomy than watch Katie Couric, Charlie Gibson, or Brian Williams dish out what the networks think we need to know.
I myself am not interested in watching their entire half-hour spiel but sometimes, I catch a bit of a segment and wished that I could have seen the entire thing. When that happens I get online and start clicking around.
Without a doubt, NBC has the most news video available online. They even include the entire previous episode of their Nightly News with Brian Williams. The entire episode not your style? Then just pick the clips you want to watch instead. NBC also includes a nice amount of videos that are web only.
ABC doesn't do too bad with its World News with Charles Gibson. (Oooh, Charles sounds so much more distinguished than Charlie.) No full episodes here of their nightly news offering but there are plenty of clips available for your viewing pleasure.
If the feminine delivery is more to your liking, CBS provides full episodes of their Evening News with Katie Couric. They too offer up a ton of clips and I feel their site is the easiest to navigate and best to look at. I guess they have to do something to get them to watch their news star.
Sadly, CNN and FOX News offer nothing in the way of competition. Both of these cable networks' video sections are clunky and unappealing. Talk about having to pick your way around to find what you're looking for! If you're looking for specific American programming, steer clear of these sites and check out the big three networks first.
It's unfortunate that all of these networks don't provide better websites. Just think of the money they spend on their "popular" programming and then think of what they could be doing when it comes to providing news on the web. Thankfully though, they're not the only places to get news online.

Hey there, HD!
I watch the morning and evening local news, plus the national news (always ABC with Charlie Gibson - sorry, he's not a Charles!). At least until they stop talking about news stuff and start doing the fluff. Then I switch over to Food Network :) I prefer my fluff edible!
I also usually check in with CNN during the day, and try to read the newspaper every day, although I probably only get to it realistically 4-5 days a week. It's not like I read every story, but I at least skim the headlines to get a general idea of what's going on.
Never really thought of myself as a news junkie, but I guess I kind of am!
To be totally honest, I don't watch news on TV at all anymore. I don't read the daily newspaper either. I just found it really hard to believe that every major TV station, and every single newspaper would only discover the same nonstories every single day. If I want to find out the real score, all I have to do is go to a gas station. The gas prices are going to drive the economy into the ground. Now Bush (I saw the headline in a newstand) wants to do offshore drilling. I got a better idea. Let's have an independent investigation into why the prices are so high! Who's profiting? Is it because the Arabs are pissed off, or because Texans are getting rich again?
I do check the headlines on the internet on a daily basis, but I find that most really interesting stuff I hear from other people who watch the news daily. In fact, the most interesting thing to happen in my town recently (a school shooting), I heard about several hours before the news came on. Not only that, but I knew that the shooting was a gay hate crime 3 days before the news guys figured it out. I knew all the details before the first newscast, just because our local grapevine is actually better than the news.
I periodically read news magazines, and also, about once or twice a month, I read the UK newspapers online. I used to read the paper front to back daily, but the last couple of years, I haven't bothered.
I use to stay up late to watch the 11PM local news until I realized the same stories are repeated in the morning. For all the news channels, local, national, CNN, MSNBC etc most of the news is repeated over and over and therefore really isn't "news". Sometimes I just do mindless news watching because there are no good shows to watch. Everything is repeated over and over and over again. I'm beginning to think there is a shortage of news and everyone have an opinion. I'm preferring to all the guests. Love HGTV and Food Network.
Hey HD,
Just found your "other" site! I consider myself to be a 'news junkie'. I watch some TV news, but not much. Most of it is very biased and slanted. Hmmmmm like all three major anchors going to the middle east with Messiah Obama. They’ve clearly shown their cards if anyone wasn’t previously aware of their bias.
I get most of my news from talk radio. I start the morning with Laura Ingram, then one of my favorites, Dennis Prager, then Michael Medved and finish up with Hugh Hewit. When I hear them talking about something I want more information on, then I go to the internet. For instance about six weeks ago, they were talking about Congress failing to pass the “drill bill”. Interestingly enough, there wasn’t a mention of it on the national TV stations….Why do you think that was? I searched it out on the internet though and got the real scoop. It was a full week later before the National news started reporting on it, but that was because talk radio was burning up the airwaves about it.
I never heard on the National news about Messiah Obama “telling” the American people that we must teach our children Spanish. That he is embarrassed when Europeans come to America and they can speak English, but that when ‘we’ Americans go to Europe, all we can say is “Merci Beaucoup”. Well let’s see, if we teach all our children to speak Spanish, they still won’t be able to converse in Europe. None of the European countries speak Spanish, except Spain, and that is Castilian Spanish, not the Spanish that is spoken in the USA or Mexico for that matter. I have traveled Europe many times, and the thread that binds them together is the fact that many Europeans DO speak English. However, it’s the Queens English, not good ol US of A English. So I ask you, how will Messiah Obama dictating to us that our children MUST learn to speak Spanish prevent him from being embarrassed? How is that going to help our children? I agree, it’s a very good thing for us to teach our children Spanish, living here in the US, it comes in very handy. But the National language of the USA is ENGLISH, and should remain so. But I digress…I never saw/heard any of this on the National news stations….
The newspapers are equally as bad at reporting fair and accurate information, and that’s why they are all in financial trouble and failing. They are quickly becoming the medium of the past….like the 8 track.
Well HD, it was fun to find you here, and I’ll back in from time to time. I too love Reality TV….
