The Amazing Race: Let's Name Our Chicken Phil
Where did we leave off in The Amazing Race last week? Oh, that's right in Burkina Faso at the third pit stop. Because they arrived first in the last leg of the race, Azaria & Hendekea take off first at 7:58 AM. Teams will have to follow a marked path to a local village and find the tribal chief where they will receive a customary gift of generosity and their next clue. Azaria & Hendekea got to the tribal chief (before the second team even left) and received their clue as well as a chicken. After receiving their chicken, the teams would have to take a taxi approximately 100 miles to the town of Bouda Pelegtanga and search for their next clue. They must keep their chicken with them at all times and if they don't have their chicken at the mat with Phil, they won't get to check in.
While Azaria & Hendekea are on their way to Bouda Pelegtanga (and Azaria is on her case about moving too slow), the next batch of teams take off. Beginning at 8:13 AM TK & Rachel, Nathan & Jennifer, Kynt & Vyxsin, Ronald & Christina, and Nicolas & Donald all take off within one minute of each other and go to find the tribal chief. It doesn't take them long before they're off to Pelegtanga themselves while Jennifer & Shana have to wait until 8:38 AM to leave. As the blondes take off in their taxi, they decide to name their chicken Phil because the chicken looks like Phil and is cute like Phil. I'm sure Phil is ecstatic about that.
At Bouda Pelegtanga, teams receive a Detour. They can either decide to shake their pan or shake their booty. In "Shake Your Pan", teams have to mine one ounce of gold to receive their next clue. In "Shake Your Booty", teams must learn a traditional local dance and perform it for a judging panel made up of local celebrities. The catch to the booty task is that they have to also include some creative moves of their own before the judges will let them pass on and give them their next clue. Not enough creativity and that team would receive a ten minute penalty.
The front runners (Nathan & Jennifer, TK & Rachel, and Azaria & Hendekea) all choose to shake their booty and head on over to the dancing arena. Meanwhile, Lorena & Jason are finally allowed to begin this leg of the race (at 10:07 AM). Nathan & Jennifer shook their tailfeathers but it wasn't good enough for the judges and got a 10 minute penalty. While TK & Rachel were watching them, they decided there was no way they were going to do that so they changed their minds and went to pan gold. Azaria & Hendekea danced and were the first team to get the next clue.
Teams would now have to find Pelegtanga Market where they would have a chance to use a U-Turn on another team behind them. If they chose to use it, that team would have to backtrack and complete the other task in the detour that they didn't complete the first time around. Azaria & Hendekea chose not to use the U-Turn and Nathan & Jennifer chose not to use it as well. After that decision, teams have to travel by taxi to the outskirts of Ouagadougou to the Tampouy Goat Market where they would receive their next clue.
Meanwhile, Ronald & Christina shook their booties (and rubbed booties) but didn't score in the creativity department so had to wait 10 minutes to continue. Nicolas & Donald finished panning for gold and headed for the U-Turn in third place. Kynt & Vyxsin finished dancing and are in fourth place at the moment. One of the best "feel good" moments in the show had to have been Kynt & Vyxsin. Kynt says they must look like aliens that came from the sky to the West African people but that they've been so warm and kind to them. It was extremely touching the way he said that but the thing that was funny is that Vyxsin was right next to him cradling their chicken as though it were a baby. Hehehe.
After the blondes (Shana & Jennifer) finish their hips and boobs booty dance, they headed to the U-Turn in sixth place and chose to use it on Lorena & Jason. TK and Rachel (finally on their way to the market after falling behind switching tasks) thinks the blondes are making a mistake but Shana says that it's a competition and they're there to win the money. Lorena & Jason, in last place, are doing their booty dance while all of the other teams are on their way to the market.
Azaria & Hendekea are the first at the next clue box and it's a Roadblock. One person in each team must load up a bicycle with supplies and even a live goat and ride into the marketplace, find their specific vendor, and deliver their supplies. After doing that, they would get their next clue. Azaria and Jennifer (of Jennifer & Nathan) do the task for their teams and finish up in no time at all. Meanwhile, Lorena & Jason finish up their dance and get to the U-Turn and see that the blondes have done them in. They're pissed about it but go off to do the mining task. What else could they do?
After delivering their supplies to their vendor at the marketplace, teams must then travel by taxi to Ouagadougou where they must find the Hotel de Ville and the next pit stop. And they can't forget their chicken! The majority of teams are working on the marketplace task still as Nathan & Jennifer and Azaria & Hendekea race to the mat in front of Phil. Azaria & Hendekea beat Nathan & Jennifer by a split second and win first place again and motor scooters. Jennifer was frustrated at coming in second again -- the girl even had the nerve to yell out to Azaria & Hendekea as they were racing to the mat that they'd already come in first already and to basically let another team have a chance. Puh-lease Jennifer! Lorena & Jason were now on their way to the marketplace where many of the other teams were finishing up and leaving for the next pit stop.
Karma almost bit Shana & Jennifer in the ass when Jennifer couldn't find her vendor in the marketplace. Rachel was having a hard time of her own. She found her vendor quick enough but then got lost on the way out. Meanwhile, Ronald & Christina and Nicolas & Donald reached Phil to become the third and fourth teams to finish that leg of the race. In the second "feel good" moment of the evening Kynt & Vyxsin, on their way to the pit stop, became really emotional. Vyxsin said she that because they'd been in Africa so long she's had a chance to really take things in and remarks that the people are so wonderful but that because they have to live the way they do ... and then she breaks down and starts crying. I really am liking them.
Kynt & Vyxsin finished fifth, Shana & Jennifer finished sixth, and TK & Rachel finished seventh. Rachel was shocked that they weren't the last team to arrive. In the end, between their late start in this leg of the race and the U-Turn that was given to them by the blondes, it just was too much to recover from and Lorena & Jason were eliminated. When Phil asked her about their relationship, Lorena said that she wanted her and Jason to stay together. Then all three of them (Lorena, Jason, and the chicken) hugged and the credits rolled.
Next week, Ron takes a nasty spill at the Detour (it looked like it hurt) and trouble bares down on the blondes. Yikes! It looks like a bus is going to crash into them. What did you think about this week's episode? How did you feel about the blondes using the U-Turn and Lorena & Jason being eliminated? I don't know about you but after this episode, Kynt & Vyxsin are my new favorite team and TK & Rachel are my next favorite team. Who are your favorites after this week?

I love the idea of having to carry a chicken around with them the whole time. It just added one more little stress to the race!
The bad thing about not having any air travel this race was that there wasn't really any room for the teams to get mixed up. Lorena and Jason mainly lost because they were the last team to start.
I had to laugh as Jen (of Nathan and Jen) whined, "That's not fair" to A&H racing and beating them by a split second. It's a race, why shouldn't they do their best?
I am also starting to like Kynt and Vyxsin despite the initial bad impression I got. My favorites, TK & Rachel continue to perform below what I expect. If they don't start shining soon, it'll just prove that they aren't really stars after all.
I think Shana and Jennifer made a bad move on using the U-turn. There really wasn't any reason to use it since Lorena and Jason were so far back. If they had used it on TK and Rachel, the team that was really right behind them it would have made sense, but still not really a good idea.
I like the idea of a U-turn better than a yield. A better team that is yielded will not suffer as much as a bad team. I would love to have it on one of those tasks that people give up on...and then find out after they complete the other detour option that have to go back to the one that frusterated them!
With no tivo and Sundays being my wifes tv night(Extreme Homemakeover, Desperate Houswives) I get no Amazing Race lol. Now were the chickens alive? That would be hard.
Yes, the chickens were alive. The teams had to carry them in a mesh bag. LOL -HD
Somebody explain to me how you can mine an ounce of gold in an hour or so and the people there are so poor.
Just a couple of things....
What's with all the animals this season??? There have been donkeys, camels and now chickens what's next???
Also what was so special about Azaria & Hendekea's dance? Maybe I walked away from the tv or something but it looked identical to Jennifer and Nate's. And the blondes...were they going to strip next? eww
(And Jennifer if you want first you need to run faster next time...it is a race.)
Well it kind of stinks that Jason and Lorena were so far behind and there wasn't the usual wait at an airport or something to let them catch-up...But I'm glad...this season kind of has a true sense of it being a "race".
Azaria & Hendekea continue to be my favorites. They're both highly competitive, intelligent competitors who seem to get along well with other racers. As far as Nathan and Jennifer are concerned, I can't wait until they're eliminated. If Jennifer hadn't been following Hendekea at the road block, she never would have finished it that quickly. She was pushy and rude to the locals during the task. She has a lot of nerve expecting a team to give up first place, so that they would get a prize. After all, this isn't kindergarten, where we have to make sure everybody gets a prize!
The pinkies from Kentucky continue to be entertaining to watch. I hope they stick around until the end. I was hoping tonight would be a nonelimination round. Jason is an absolute hottie! I had to laugh when at the end of the show, he basically said he didn't want to get married. He said, he thought it was better if people stayed together because they loved each other. My sister and I had a good laugh at that one. I do like the concept of a U turn. I hope that karma bites the blondes in the bootie over it.
Next season, I would like the producers of Amazing Race to try something different. I would like them to find a part of Africa that is not really poor. I know that there are places in Africa, where things aren't that bad. I would then like them to find another part of the world where there is a lot of poverty for their expose of the 3rd world. I know that there are place in Europe where people are struggling. There are very poor parts of Central and South America as well. They might even want to use an inner city in the US instead. Otherwise, people are getting the idea that everybody in Africa lives in absolute poverty, and everywhere else has it together. Yes, I know there is a lot of poverty in Africa and India. There is also a lot of poverty in other parts of the world. Next year, I want to see the more civilized parts of Africa!
Shawn...
Tell your wife I said that the producers, stars, and 'contestants' of Extreme Makeover Home Edition can all shampoo my crotch. I focking hate that show. It's gotten SO liberal and SO sappy. Remember when that show was actually about home renovation and how they do it? Now it's all about "let's create a flowery and poofy retreat for..." AHHHHHH!!!!!! I focking hate that show!
I am so over Azaria & Hendekea. They really get on my nerves with the whole "Africa is our home" crap. If it's so great, focking move there. What would happen if a couple white people in the race said, upon arriving in Germany, "Oh it's so nice to be in the Fatherland." ?
Speaking of Africa, I'm growing very sick of it this season. It's time for the race to move on. They were in Europe for what, ten minutes this season?
I'm sure next the liberal producers will want to glorify the Middle East and I bet you seventy-three bucks they end-up in China this season.
I focking hate the government of the People's Republic. Why do we trade with that country? Why are we allowing them to host the Olympics? Remember the guy standing in the front of the tank? What was his name? What happened to him? He was executed with, according to Amnesty International, as many as 10,000 other people at those demonstarations. Every member of the Chinese Politburo deserves to die.
Sorry, rant over.
Meanwhile, I was very happy to see Marie Osmond make a fool out of herself in that stupid doll dance last night. I'm sure HD is writing an article on it, I will comment in it later.
Eric
Please keep your fake cussing comments to yourself. If you need to rant, there are other words in the English language to express how you feel without the need to be so creative.
Eric, Admitted Home Makeover isnt my fave. I could just see the old house and the new house and be done with it. But then I get to watch Desperate Housewives which I hate to admit but has become one of my favorite shows.
I love Desperate Housewives too! I can't wait for this week's episode with the tornado and everything.
Its funny its a show I would have never watched on my own(Desperate Housewives). But my wife kept bugging me to rent season 1 and after the firs few shows I was hooked. We went through both seasons 1 and 2 in about a week and 1/2. I am still renting season 3 right now but watching the current season while its on tv.
Im not sure where I read it but, with the writers strike Desperate Housewives only has a few episodes left. (I also watch DH and brothers & sisters)
I kept expecting someone to lose their chicken, and then Lorena and Jason would have a chance to catch up. But no such luck. And Jason's monologue at the end cracked me up! Sorry, Lorena, look elsewhere for that wedding ring!
Jen is really a nut complaining that Azaria and Hendekea have "had their turn" at being first. Um, does she really not get the point? So if Jen gets first on one leg, she really should let someone else have their turn and win the final leg? Dork.
I don't really have a favorite. I like the Goths okay. I like TK & Rachel, but he has a really crummy sense of direction. Seems like every episode he's turning the wrong way at some point. I think Donald and Christina should team up, leaving the worthless Nicholas and Ronald as a team. That might make it more interesting!
deedlestexan, I would respond to you, but I won't clutter-up HD's site with it.
I should specify that I to like Desperate Housewives although I sometimes feel like I need a notebook or something to keep track of what the hell is going on.
Did it appear to anyone else that the blondes meant to use the u-turn on TK & Rachel and put up the Lorena/Jason card by accident?
I was also touched by the Pinks comments about Africa. Like Dick in BB8, I at first judged them by their exterior and have found myself cheering for them in the end.
As to the overuse (in my opinion) of the f-word... I do use the word, but do not care for its casual use. Use it too much and it loses its *punch* for those times that REALLY need a strong word!! lol
I was really not happy with the inclusion of animals in this leg. Carrying a chicken around in a small bag the entire time? That's not very humane. Plus, I couldn't stand to watch the poor little goats strapped down. Yes, I realize they were going to market, but still! I watched for a little disclaimer at the end stating that no animals were harmed in the making of the episode, but, needless to say, there wasn't one. :(
OK, seriously... you're trying to impose your modern, western beliefs about 'animals are people to' onto the culture of Rural Africa. Think about it.
