The Amazing Race: A New Olympic Sport?

In this week's The Amazing Race, the ten remaining teams began the second leg of the race under the cover of darkness. They were to drive themselves to the local airport and fly ultimately to Amsterdam, The Netherlands where they then had to catch a train to Central Station and search the city for a bridge where they would find their next clue. Azaria & Hendekea were the first team to leave at 12:00 AM and Nathan & Jennifer were the last team to leave at 3:00 AM.

Donald & Nicolas got a flat tire thanks to one of those pesky curbs but were eventually able to make it to the airport where many other teams were waiting for the ticket counter to open. While most of the teams were focused more on getting to the airport, Ronald & Christina and Pat & Kate stopped at an inn on the way to use the internet to research the flights. This is where we began to see Ronald's overbearing side concerning Christina. I don't know if I would like him as a partner.

Everybody was able to make the first flight to Dublin except for Marianna & Julia. Once the flight landed in Dublin, teams that hadn't been able to secure tickets for the Dublin to Amsterdam flight scurried over to the gate to get on the standby list. Nicolas was a little short with his agent and Ronald, who was standing next to him and trying to get on standby himself, decided to take Nicolas to task for it. What nerve! Nicolas & Donald got lucky and were able to make the first flight to Amsterdam leaving the Ronald & Christine behind to catch the second flight along with Julia & Marianna and Pat & Kate.

Once in Amsterdam, the teams are getting tickets for the train so that they can find the bridge with the clue. The clue was a Detour: teams must choose between Hoisting It and Hunting It. In Hoisting It, teams must move five pieces of furniture up the side of a building using a rope and pulley system. In Hunting It, teams must hunt for a specially color-coded pair of bikes among thousands of other bikes.

Azaria & Hendekea were the only pair among the front runners to choose the bike task. When they had been in first place originally, they were knocked down to fifth place by the time they found their bikes. Some of the teams were having problems with the hoisting task too though. TK couldn't tie a knot to save his life and eventually he and Rachel switches places where she busted through the hoisting like a gangbuster.

Lorena & Jason were the first to finish the task and now they had to travel by bus to a rural village named Ransdorp, The Netherlands, and find their next clue in a field. Unfortunately though, they missed the first bus and by the time the next bus came along their lead had evaporated. Kynt & Vyxsin finish and begin looking for the bus stop only miss the ones the front runners had got on to. Meanwhile, the second plane was just now landing in Amsterdam. Those teams are way behind.

After the bus arrives in Ransdorp, the teams found their next clue. It was a road block that only one member of the team can do. It involved ditch vaulting and while some of the teams didn't have a problem with it there were those obligatory few teams who just couldn't get it done quick enough. Jason immediately was able to accomplish the task and got the next clue which told them to choose a Dutch cargo bike and ride it through the countryside looking for the dropoff point at the Durgerdam Yacht Club. That would be the pit stop for this leg of the race.

Lorena & Jason were the first team to arrive at the pit stop and won three-wheeled sport bikes (really?). Nathan & Jennifer were the second team to reach the pit stop and Shana & Jennifer were third. Meanwhile, Ronald & Christina are fighting with each other while trying to decide between hoisting and hunting and continue fighting while hunting for their bikes. That annoys Pat & Kate who are also hunting for bikes.

Kynt & Vyxsin are the fourth team to greet Phil. (It was hilarious when they went to high-five each other and he missed her hand and hit her in the face!) Donald is struggling with the ditch vaulting and has stripped down to his underwear to lighten the load. Azaria & Hendekea are the fifth team at the pit stop and TK & Rachel are the sixth team. Marianna & Julia were able to catch up during the ditch vaulting and finish this leg in the seventh spot. Donald finally clears the ditch and him and Nicolas arrive at the pit stop eighth.

Ronald was giving Christina a hard time at the ditch vaulting task but ultimately she got it and they arrived at the pit stop in ninth. We saw some footage of Kate (I think) doing the ditch task but they had to have been really behind the other teams. They were the last to arrive at the pit stop and Phil was, as always, sorry to tell them they'd been eliminated.

Next week, Ronald & Christina are still arguing and Lorena loses it during a task trying to milk a camel. Eeeks!

I loved the ditch vaulting task! Some of them took really nasty falls but thankfully they were all OK. It was just hilarious to watch. Ronald needs to get off Christina's back if they're going to have any chance at winning this thing. Nathan & Jennifer were still annoying and continue to get on my nerves. What did you think about this week's episode?

I was glad that Azaria & Hendekea fell back a number of slots. They get on my nerves.

I'm rooting for grandpa (I always root for the old people on thsi show) but I'm afraid he's not much of a contender to win.

The goths are starting to win me over.

I think in the end, Ronald will be a better Dad to Chirstina. I just wonder if it happens during the race, or if it is happening now as he is watching himself being a jackass on TV. Something gives me the feeling Ronald wanted a son.

Here's a question: During haul it, did they have to tie the ropes on the furniture a certain way, or did it just need to be whatever safe/secure knot they could tie? Specific knots I would have been bad at, whatever would work I'd be good at.

EricC, I don't think they had to tie the knots a certain way. I think they just had to make sure the furniture was stable enough to be safely hoisted up.

I too am liking the goths more and more. I think they're my faves along with TK & Rachel and Lorena & Jason.

Grandpa in his skivvies covered with mud--oh my poor eyes! I loved the task though, and I am positive I would have gone splat in the mud myself.

Listening to Ronald berate his daughter is worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. She is showing remarkable restraint in not telling him exactly where to go.

I don't really have a favorite team yet--I just have my least faves. The goths are cool though. It was funny to hear some of the teams call them "hippies."

If I had been Christina I think I would have drowned Ronald in the mud ditch. How awful he is to her. I hope he is really ashamed of himself when he watches this. She is showing an amazing amount of restraint.

I thought it was interesting that Azarea and Hendekea knew enough to get directly on the train and buy their tickets there instead of wasting time at the station ticket window. That was a good move. They must have traveled in Europe before.

My favorites are the Pinkies (Goths) and the Hippies (TK and Rachel) because I like their attitudes toward each other. I was sorry to see the Ministers go though cause I liked their attitude too, especially when they said, with a wink, that they didn't think God really cared one way or the other if they won or not. Three cheers for them... maybe they could sit down and spend some time with Amber from BB8 and straighten her out a bit about priorities.

Last comment... it's a good thing that none of the racers were color blind because some of the color combinations on the bikes would have been totally impossible for them to see if they were... especially the orange and green. I wonder if they even thought about that when they planned the task!

I enjoyed last night's episode and had to call in my roommate to watch too, since she lived there for 6 months. She was fortunate enough to catch the part with Gramps stripping down...yuck!

I know that it may be edited to be seem worse than it is, but I don't think I could handle a running commentary on what I'm doing wrong from my dad (or anyone else). That's really going to hurt them if they aren't really working together.

I don't mind the goths as much as I thought I might. I'm also enjoying TK and Rachel and Lorena and Jason.

It seemed like they spent too much time showing people trying to get to the airport, and not enough time on the tasks. I don't like the guy who had his grandfather take the pole vaulting task. He's really rude, and should have offered to do the task, instead moaning about it. The Asian father is annoying, as well. He can't seem to shut up. I like most of the other teams so far.

The women killed on the furniture moving task! I couldn't believe that those guys could not tie secure knots.

I know editing has a lot to do with it, but Christina is a saint. The parent/child dynamic is always tricky, but Ronald needs to realize that Christina is an adult and can make her own decisions. I think she might be better off if she binds and gags him and just carries him along for the entire race.

I can't decide if my favorite part of the ditch vaulting was Gramps in his underwear, one of the blondes taking a header in the ditch or Marianna flying over in one fell swoop (apparently she did track in university and vaulting was her speciality).

Love The Amazing Race! Before I had kids it gave me some great travel ideas...now I'm just green with envy at all the cool places they get to go.

I know editing plays a large part in all reality shows but the knot tying...I would have been unable to do that as well..not sure if my wife could have done better though. Ronald needs to shut up and stop thinking like the engineer he probably is. Nathan is going to get his ass kicked by Jennifer before this is over...he needs to shut up like Ronald.

I don't have a favorite yet...I typically like the teams that embrace other cultures and are respectful to the locals...sometimes that seems to be hard for a lot of teams. Invariably someone will come up with a racist comment like back in India a few seasons ago when one of the girls said"eww...look...they keep breeding" about some poverty stricken kids...just the attitude we need for the Ugly American stereotype to continue.

My personal poll on the worst tourists I have ever seen:

1. Israeli tour group in Thailand throwing food and trash into a pristine river.
2. German tourists flicking cigarette butts into a nationally renowned nature preserve.
3. Older British couple throwing a hissy fit at a hotel over cold toast.
4. Australian "lager louts" drinking their way through Europe with zero stops at anything remotely historic or artistic.
5. Group of American teenagers taking a tour of the Vatican giggling and laughing.

Not sure why I am on such a rant right now..sorry for taking up so much space!
