Not That Bad At All

I really didn't expect to get pulled into yet another reality show. With that said, I kinda really like The Next Great American Band.

I absolutely adore American Idol still and I really love Rock Star. Because of that, I gave TNGAB a chance. I'm glad I did. By the way, if this show had played on any other night of the week I wouldn't have been able to really give it a shot but thank goodness it's on Fridays.

Last night's show dealt with the always fun (for us) audition process and out of that only twelve bands survived (deservedly so) and made it to the next round. The twelve bands we'll get to enjoy this coming Friday are:

  • Tres Bien
  • Light of Doom
  • The Hatch
  • The Clark Brothers
  • Dot Dot Dot
  • The Muggs
  • Denver and the Mile High Club Orchestra
  • Sixwire
  • Cliff Wagner and the Old No. 7
  • The Likes of You
  • Franklin Bridge
  • Rocket

The bands aren't just rock. They're not just country. They're not just R&B. TNGAB didn't just stick to one genre. That's one of the things I really liked about the show and I know I'm going to like it even more as the bands are whittled down. Oh and by the way, did I mention these bands are fantastic?

If you missed this show last night and feel it might be a show you would like, most definitely go check out the show's site and watch the videos there to get yourself kinda caught up.

I think you would commit a reality TV sin if you missed the show this coming Friday. Trust me. I have a feeling you would like this show if you gave it a chance.

God help me I got drawn in too HD. I think I turned it on in the first place because Johnny Reznik was judging. I didn't hear all the bands because for some reason DVR didn't record 40 mins of the show, but it was the Clark Brothers who drew me in, big time. Man, what absolutely friggin excellent musicians! Just when my text message phone bills had gone down and I'd promised myself never ever to text message another vote for a contestant, here comes a group I'm gonna have to text for. They're gonna need it since they aren't a mainstream group.

Wait did you say Tres Bien? I went to high school with those guys. I went to their shows for years. I have their first CD they ever made. I'm so baffled right now. Thank you so much HamsterDame. I can't wait to watch the show!

Well, I watched some of the videos. It was very difficult to navigate through the videos, though. I hope that Fox posts the entire episodes after this, since I don't get home from work on Fridays until 9:30. It definitely looks like a great show. I thought all the bands I saw had a lot of talent. It's really hard for a lot of new bands to get radio play nowadays. If they don't fit perfectly into an established genre, none of the stations are interested. It's especially difficult for many rock bands, since many stations seem to only want to play stuff that's really old, or new stuff by artists established 20 years ago.

My favorite band for the last several years, String Cheese Incident, was selling out major concert venues for several years, before breaking up this summer. You couldn't hear them on the radio, though, it was pretty much word of mouth.

This show could actually change that, because they might actually open up new areas on the radio. If these bands are on TV, and getting lots of publicity, it will encourage radio stations to take a chance on some of them.

I don't like heavy metal one little bit, but I gotta say I was very impressed by the preteen/early-teen heavy metal band. I don't remember the band's name, though. I just started the new Eric Clapton autobiography, and have only gotten to the point where he was around twelve years old. I don't think he had even begun to play the guitar at that point, so for that young band to be so good so young just stuns me.
