Deal With It

Awww. They're getting along so well at the saloon in Bonanza City on Kid Nation. The older kids are even doing double shots. How precious. Thanks to the red and green teams for helping to put up the money for this little shindig by the way.

And now the show begins. It's Day 8 and it's time to wake up. Greg is acting like a jerk banging pot lids against each other in the cabins to wake everybody up. Remind you of anybody? Meanwhile, the council members are having their 'reading a made up journal' meeting. Oh no! It's time for a curfew. This should go over well. Little Taylor says they'll just have to "deal with it" for the first of a thousand times. They settle on 9:30 (yes PM) while the rest of the their city is up in arms over being mauled, physically and mentally, by Greg after awakening. Little 8-year-old Mallory doesn't appreciate all of this hullaballoo and is scared after hearing the cursing coming out of Greg's mouth while he's being confronted by his fellow citizens concerning his 'waking up' methods.

When all of the kids are assembled and Mike tells them about the curfew many of the kids are upset about it. Deal with it! Colton, introduced to us for the first time, helps to bring order to everything by saying that he thinks it's a good idea. Then we got to watch a cute little Colton segment of him scaring the cows. The bull doesn't scare so easily at first though. Colton continues to walk up on the bull and finally the bull give in and runs off as well. What a cute little cowboy!

Could you believe the flour fight in the kitchen? I was appalled. I would have snatched those kids up by the ears and given them a good talking to. Taylor finally begins breakfast, brunch I mean, for everybody and when it's done the kids don't like it. And what was up with the way it was served? They stuck their hands in the pot and grabbed a handful of whatever it was and handed it off to whoever wanted some chow. Do you know what it was? I couldn't tell. Deal with it!

The showdown was cute I thought. A bunch of sheep running around with playing cards around their necks and names painted on their backs. Awww. The first team to collect the three aces from the selected sheep on their provided 'Wanted' poster wins and will become the upper class. And if all of the teams get their aces in under five minutes the town will receive a reward (oooh). The blue and yellow teams stayed neck and neck throughout the challenge but the yellow team actually won out! Wow. The youngest kids are now the upper class. The blue came in second (merchant class), green in third (cooks), and the red team came in last place (laborers).

The teams all finished in under five minutes. Supposedly. Anybody else other than me question the clock here? Anyway, the council gets to choose between a pioneer microwave using electricity and a barrel of cocoa or 40 hot pizzas. Most of the kids are screaming for pizza but the council decides on the microwave. Some of the kids didn't like this too much. Deal with it! During another party at the saloon that evening, Mike has to bust things up. Time for curfew!

Day 9 begins with the kids assuming their new duties and Taylor being even bossier than normal. The laborers are cleaning the outhouses well enough and her butt's not shiny. Not quite sure what to say on that one. Oh no! It's a twister! Not really. It was one helluva windstorm though. All of the outhouses tipped over spilled. YUCK! When the storm winds down, the older kids bring the outhouses back upright. Better them than me.

Later, the entire town lines up outside the town hall and each kid goes in to nominate one kid for the gold star to the town council. Greg votes for himself. Interesting. Morgan says that everybody deserves a gold star. Classy. Olivia nominates her little sister Mallory because she keeps a smile on everybody's face, runs the store good, and because it will be her birthday.

Day 10 and it's time for the town hall meeting. Taylor is acting like a diva and the kids are sick of it. They're also sick of her telling them to deal with it. Taylor's feelings are hurt and she begins crying in front of them all. The kids want a re-election! Taylor nips that in the bud real quick by telling everybody she's sorry and that her yellow team will start helping from now on.

Anybody want to go home? Nope.

Gold star time. And the star goes to *drum roll* now nine-year-old Mallory. Mallory is shocked and thankful. Morgan and Greg looked disappointed. Greg thinks the gold star should be given out based on hard work and that she only got it because it was her birthday. Gee Greg, you should really check your attitude.

Mallory goes to call her parents and she's so excited. Her parents are too and you could tell they really miss both their little girls being home. Awww, her dad calls her 'little bit'. After the phone call, Mallory joins the other kids in the saloon where they're drowning in mugs of root beer. Cheers!

Next week it seems we'll have some religious differences concerning services, snow, and Taylor & Zach battle it out. Sounds like fun!

You're right, I think Greg has a bit of a Dick-complex. He thinks he "deserves" to win because he does the work, forgetting that having the right attitude would be a big help to the town. The younger kids are watching him and follow his lead in not following the lead of the council.

I'm so glad that Mallory got the gold star as she has been one of my favorites from the beginnning! She might not have the might to be able to pull off some of the larger tasks (like tipping the outhouses!) but she is always willing to serve where she can and with a good attitude.

By the way, the breakfast they were eating by the handful was hashbrowns. If they were good and warm they wouldn't have been able to pick them up like that, so they were probably cold. No wonder they were complaining. I wouldn't want to have my breakfast late for it only to be a handful of cold, greasy hashbrowns.

The council made the right decision about the microwave, even if it wasn't unanimous. I can't believe one of the arguments for taking the pizza (couldn't tell by whom) was that they didn't know how long the microwave would last. True, but you KNOW how long the pizza will last...not very long!

I'm liking the format of the show. It's kinda like a silly little sitcom where there's a problem and then a solution. Next week's religion debate should be interesting!

The problem with the gold star idea is the same with any gold star program. If you don't give the rewards to kids when they're making every effort to show appropriate behavior, they eventually stop seeing it as an incentive, and start being resentful. The problem is that there is only one gold star. I do believe that there needs to be some kind of behavior management in place. There doesn't seem to be any penalties for breaking the rules.

I feel that the show's producers don't seem to care very much for the children's safety. It's bad enough that CBS let Big Brother housemates be verbally abused by a guy with a history of it. When it's children, someone needs to step in. I can understand Greg's frustration. He's done more than his share of the work. However, he's scaring the younger children. This is not a good thing for these children.

In addition, I don't think it's really appropriate to have children dealing with outhouses that have been knocked over. If they have enough electricity for a microwave, surely they could have enough plumbing for real toilets.

I'm glad we get to see a different set of parents every show. I want to see what kind of stupid people would let their children be on a show where they would not have adults intervening when their children's safety is at risk. If I had a child on a TV show, I would want to be there the whole time, making sure that the child was in a safe environment, and not being subject to abuse.

Why I think Taylor's parents are bad parents.

Taylor, in cae you don't know is the "get over it" girl who refuses to do any work because she thinks it is beneath her.

Exhibit #1...

In this picture you can clearly see that her parents allow her to ride in a car (or mini van) with her shoulder seatbelt behind her. I guess beauty queens are immuine from death by vehicular accident.

Exhibit #2...

Where I come from little girls are usually encouraged to not place themselves in a position where people can look up their skirts.

Exhibit #3...

Just... plain... creepy.

Exhibit #4...

Using the information in this pisture I was able to determine Taylor's last name using google in about twenty seconds. Why don't her parents just but her a one-way ticket to Aruba and be done with it?

Exhibit #5...

This little girl will not wash a dish or clean a shitter but she'll hapily kill a deer? I don't get it.

Well, I was pretty sure I liked this show, but am not convinced. Seems to be up in the air right now. Greg is doing a lot, but his attitude seems to be doing a lot more. Too bad someone can't help him understand, that he could get a lot farther if he just changed his attitude, but... we also don't know his growing up background.

Taylor is getting on my last nerve. My goodness but she thinks she is hot stuff and should be treated like upper crust society, while doing nothing to earn that respect and designation.

I'll be watching again next week, just to see what happens.

Still going through BB withdrawal, but we did get glimpses during this show of poor sportsmenship.

taylor, taylor, poor little miss taylor. that child needs to stop trying to be a lazy, bossy little brat and pull her weight on that show or lose her spot on that 'council'. I would lay money on she's emulating her mamma, or having seen the way some of those pageant mammas treat their kids, she's acting out aggression she feels towards her mamma. however, I also think that if she doesn't end up doing what's right, it could really hurt her opportunities in the pageant world. it's kids like her that grow up to be 'adults' like paris hilton, who are justifiably unliked by kids like greg who do work and yet get overlooked. I can understand greg's frustrations. I don't agree with him acting out, but I can understand him. personally, I think one child from each team should be rewarded each time. you know cbs has the money...as for the kids being there alone, I don't buy it...

What I want to know is...

How much are the kids on the council getting paid?

I'm not talking about the nickels and dimes the kids get for the town's economy, I'm talking about how much are they getting paid by the producers.

Think about it: The kid who gets the star gets $20,000. What is the incentive for the kids on the council to stay on the council? If you quit from the council, then you're eligible for the star... hmmm

By the way, 2 pounds of gold is not $20K. It's more like $13,200.

sandic said:

Maybe the $13,200 is after taxes?

Sorry but I can't get into this show. It's nothing more than exploitation of these kids to push a thinly-veiled negative point of view about our society.

So how exactly do children with limited life experience build a different society than that in which they are inculcated?

By manipulating them with $20k rewards?

The producers are proving why pure democracy or socialism has never worked and why our Founders wisely chose a Republic.

I really enjoy this show.
It's not quite what I was expecting from the promos, I thought we would have a lot more of a kid driven society rather than an imposed council and organised game structure.

However, the competitions are great. The kids are all interesting. And every show so far has made me laugh with them.

Taylor is a little bossy it is true. However, I've encountered a number of young girls her age who are just as bossy (and none are beauty queens). To hold her own on the council she probably feels the need to be more outspoken. She sure does have some odd ideas about what is "right" and is not very good at social skills. That shiny butt comment is sure to haunt her.
