Fei Long v Zhan Hu

Ni hao!

And so it begins. The 15th installment of Survivor is off and running. Or jogging. Or strolling. Or crawling.

Was it just me or was tonight's season premiere kinda boring?

I really didn't want to type that but I couldn't help it. I'm sitting here going over my notes (yes I take notes) and I'm not seeing anything truly exciting about the show tonight.

The temple in the opening was absolutely gorgeous. The whole Leslie/Courtney thing is already old to me. They had to leave their suitcases and went to camp with just the clothes on their backs. *yawn*

The tribes were pre-arranged by Survivor and are:

Fei Long (Flying Dragon), red tribe - Jean-Robert (now named JR), Leslie, Amanda, Courtney, Denise, James, Todd, and Aaron

Zhan Hu (Fighting Tiger), yellow tribe - Frosti, Dave, Jaime, Erik, Peih-Gee (PG), Sherea, Ashley, and Chicken

After gathering according to tribes at the temple, they are sent off to their camps with a map and The Art of War. They arrive at their respective camps with rice but no flint. Of course, we have the obligatory 'time to build shelter' segments.

At Fei Long, Courtney is annoyed by her fellow tribemates. JR doesn't believe Todd is a flight attendant. And then? JR blew some smoke up Todd's arse telling him he thinks he's pretty sharp. What did Todd do? He asked JR not to tell the others that he thinks he's sharp. LMAO!!!

At Zhan Hu, Sherea is complaing about how hard things are. Chicken's trying to guide the others about how to build the shelter but none of them are really listening. Ashley's going on about her wrestling and showing the others how to dance. PG tells the camera she thinks they're the lazy camp. The others start to ask Chicken's opinion now on how to build the shelter but since they wouldn't listen to him earlier, he's not willing to offer it anymore.

The immunity challenge (the immunity idol is one of a buddha terracotta army soldier btw - thanks David!) was OK but nowhere near what I'd expect from the first challenge of the season. I thought it was way too easy. I really thought Frosti would kick ass in this comp (and he did) but James kicked bigger ass! Go James! Yay! Red tribe won. Yellow tribe will be sending somebody home.

Back at the losing tribe's camp (yellow), there's more work to be done considering their absolutely lousy shelter. Dave tries to give everybody a pep talk (you could feel him wanting to give a sly wink to the camera). PG complains that they'll never win if they don't have a decent shelter. Now they're asking Chicken's opinion again about it. Chicken's still not offering his thoughts (bad move Chicken).

We did get our first blurred out body part tonight thanks to Ashley (imagine that). She gets up from wherever she was sitting and starts walking away while her right nip is peeking out. But I guess when you have boobage like that....

At tribal council Jeff asks if any of them want to step up into a leadership role. Dave immediately raises his hand and then PG raises hers as though it were an afterthought. Ashley rolling her eyes while PG talks. Chicken says the person who should go is the person who contributed the least. Ashley is worried because she'd been sick and said she technically is the one who did the least amount of work.

Time to vote and guess who the first person evicted from Survivor: China was? It was Chicken. At least the yellow team gets fire via their torches and they get flint now.

Chicken's goodbye to the camera was a good one. The best part? "Noone more proud to have been such a small part of one big adventure. Truly an honor to be here - without a doubt."

Random thoughts - I think PG is a little bitch and hopes she goes soon. Courtney and Ashley are also on my nerves. JR's ego needs to be knocked down a notch or two. Chicken seemed to be a sweet guy but was too hard-headed when he was repeatedly asked to share his opinions and refused to do so just because he'd been rebuffed earlier.

What are your thoughts about Survivor, the tribes, and the players this season?

I read some of the stuff on other boards- I'll refrain from all the Chicken jokes I heard. Not suprised about the Ashley blur-she did Playboy this year.

survived my first viewing of Survivor. What can I say?

(I began this synopsis as the show progressed.)

I thought Survivor found:
1. Amber's crying sister
2. Jameka's praying cousin
3. Eric's 5ft brother
4. Dustin's scheming attempts
5. Nick's flabby body
6. Zack's lost personality
7. Dick's father
8. Daniele's skinny whining niece
9. Jen's egotistical half sister
10. Jessica's fake boobs (TG she left the voice in Kansas)
11. Joe's wardrobe
12. Mike's silent partner
13. Kail's alliance (she tried to form)

Carol left before the show began.

Glad I didn't know CBS recycled their reality players.
I guess with the law suits, there're running out of money

I agree, survivor was kind of boring. Only people who i even found interesting tonight were Todd, Aaron and Frosti.

congrats on the new site HD. such fun.

oh, and James too... he could end up being the most interesting person of all. and seems so sweet.

gee I only like the guys so far.

Hey HD, nice place you got here.

I don't think those boob's of Ashley's are original equipment ;-)

You hit the nail on the head with the Chicken man. Chicken tried to be the leader and every year that is the one that they want to get rid of but he shot himself in the foot by not offering an opinion when it was asked of him.

This show is always the same for me, I don't find anyone I like from the get go but I sure know who I don't like and it's miss Ashley. Well Courtney isn't winning any points either with her "NY is the center of the earth attitude" **rolling eyes** Also JR needs to put a shirt on or get some pants that aren't so low. eeeks.

After not having watched in probably 5 years, I decided to try watching it again tonight. I cant say this is going to be the season that gets me watching. Being a wrestling fan I mainly watched to see Ashley, but I don't think even that can keep me watching this season. While it might be a bit early in the season to say, I think it looks boring and the casting isn't wonderful. I guess I now get to go back to watching wrestling and UFC on Thursdays. Oh well, maybe next season will be worth watching.

I liked quite a few things about today's show. Loved the look at the culture. I always enjoy the "travelogue" that comes with the show. And the photography is great.

I really liked James tonight. He was a total work horse and then kinda secretly shy and cute. And he dominated that competition. I too expected and was routing to see Frosti tear up the course. However it was very apparent that the head of the dragon was both heavy and awkward and tripped Frosti up quite a bit.

I was shocked to see the wrestler put forth such a poor show and was actually hoping to see her go home.
I agree with people's comments on Chicken. His decision to withdraw when people failed to hang on his every word was his demise.
I have a feeling I am going to dislike PG, Courtney and Leslie.
Jeff gave them shoes. Darn it - I wanted to see them compete in what they chose to wear on what they knew was their last day on the way in. Have they never seen this show?
Once again, I am stunned to see how ill prepared people are for this. Does no one spend time practicing how to make fire or look into building a shelter? I know they never know where they'll be but when you sign up you know there will be those 2 common things.

I'll keep watching and see if things pick up.

EEEKS, Daniel's cousin from New York has to go. OMG. She is the one (the waitress) I most dislike, and I agree, rather boring for opening night.

Must have missed something, as I thought PJ would go, she needs to go ASAP. Not sure why they would dump a guy that is willing to do what ever.

Oh well,

I also found myself bored.

I think I am really going to like James this season; he's so sweet and SO good-looking! And a great competitor so far! What else can you ask for :)

Erica said:

I was not surprised that Chicken went first. Even though he was right that they should choose to keep someone with experience even if they don't fit in, hey! This is Survivor! That never happens. :)

PG was veeeerrrry annoying. The crying after the challenge then ordering people around? Boo.

Survivor is very formulaic at this point. It is the 15th season in six years, I believe. They always advertise that they are changing things up and making it more exciting, but they rarely do. I'll admit it--the only reason I'm watching this season is because filming it in China got my attention.

I still think James is my favorite. I like his quiet demeanor. Plus he has abs to die for! :)

I thought it was great! I didn't think I would like Lesley, but did. I don't blame her for refusing to bow down before idols. I had a similar experience as a kid, and felt the same way. It seemed like a religious ceremony to me. What really endeared Lesley to me, was how she warmed to James. I love James! What a sweet guy! He's not very adept socially, but he's a very hard worker and good with challenges. Hopefully, Lesley can help him learn to socialize.
Courtney, on the other hand, was disappointing. She's from New York, and she's complaining about the different types of people there! She needs to learn from these people. I didn't like her attitude at all.
I'm okay with Chicken going. He should have helped with the shelter. Egos don't do too well on Survivor. If nobody works hard, the whole tribe will dwindle. However, the most important part of the game is building an alliance. A lot of people have gone far in this game, without being workhorses.
I liked the challenge. It wasn't hard to figure out what they were supposed to be doing. I don't like challenges that are overly complicated. I thought that it was a good challenge visually. I really like the tribe that won. They seem much more unified than the other tribe, despite having Courtney on it.
That surfing dude, Aaron, is hot! Mmmm. It's nice that us women have some nice eye candy this year. Aaron seems very intelligent, agreeing to take the leadership role, but saying it's going to be a democracy. I see Todd and Courtney as being the first two to go from that tribe.

The musician guy,Eric, I think is going to pair up with Ashley, and form the lazy young people's alliance.

I thought that the part of leaving their stuff behind worked best on Pearl Islands, where they were able to go to a village to barter afterwards. (Who could forget Rupert stealing the shoes!)

Overall, I was happy with this episode. I love Survivor. It's a relief to have it back, because I was really tired of the Dick and Dani show.

MIchele said:

Oh yippee, finally Survivor. I agree, a bit boring for the first show but I have confidence it will pick up.
Ugh, was very tired of Courtney right from the get go. Definetly has an "I'm better than everyone" attitude. Loved the location. Was disappointed in the first challenge, perhaps it was more difficult that it appeared. NOT.

It so makes me laugh when these folks act surprised that they will only have the clothes on their back. Come on folks, have you watched the show. Especially the women, I swear I would have layers on if I were going. Who cares about looking good. Be prepared.

Oh dear Chicken, I knew as soon as he decided he would no longer give his opinion that he would be gone. I had hopes for him being one of the enjoyable ones to watch.

THink I'm going to love James.

And of course, Jaime, although it gives her college town as where she is from. She is right her from my town. Although I don't know her I, at least for now, have to pull for this girl. Our local paper has already had articles about her.

HD - so glad you're doing this blog. Looking forward to enjoying the season of reality along with the rest of the addicts. "S"

Is it just me or is Survivor very abreviated from what it was back in the days of Asutralia and Africa?

Were there more episodes back then?

Anyhow, I think voting out Chicken at this point might have been a mistake. I agree that he kinda focked up, but I still think they could have used him.

I think I might get bored with this season pretty fast. Survivor has become sush a formual based show that Jiffy-Pop (Probst) doesn't even need to explain things anymore... yawn. Something needs to change. How about having a competitions within the tribe to determine the chief (aka head of household) or something?

I think China looks like a beautiful place and I would be interested in visiting there. However, I am getting sick of having China shoved down my throat. Mao Zedong was responsible for more deaths than Hitler and Stalin combined. Thing is, Stalin's regime is no longer in power. Hitler's regime is no longer in power. Mao's is still in power.

Also, let's not forget the crime against humanity that is the occupation of Tibet. When Jiffy-Pop was talking about the "four hundred year old temple" last night I could not help but think of the HUNDREDS of temples that were on average nearlly a thousand years old that have been destroyed by the Chinese in Tibet. Not to mention when Chinese soldiers would decapitate Tibetian nuns then make Tibetian monks rape the corpes.

Rememer that dude who stood in front of the tanks during the Tiananmen Square Massacre? What was his name? What ever became of him? The cronies of Mao killed him. Just like they killed, according to the Chinese Red Cross, five thousand other people at the square.

Meanwhile, the World has decided to reward the cronies of Mao by granting the Olympics to Beijing. Mao is to the 2008 Olympics what Hitler was to the 1936 Olympics.

Sorry, rant over.

I agree that the show was boring and Chicken shot himself in the foot.

Sick of Courtney already. Ten minutes into the show and twice she's mentioned "I'm from NY and we're not like that there." As if that explains her snotty attitude.

And Sherea slogging through the mud in heels stating "I'm not an outdoorsy girl." WTF, it's Survivor!! Have you watched the show? What was she expecting?

Loved James. He'll be around for a while because he's a hard worker. Hope this doesn't target him later on in the game. Win too many challenges and out he'll go, being too much of a threat to the others. Liked the way he and Lesley seemed to bond. Did you notice when Jeff handed him the Immunity Idol he passed it off to Lesley. Bet these two end up in an alliance.

PG needs to get over herself or she'll be gone like that architect last season. (She was out so fast I can't even remember her name! LOL)

I like that the teams were decided in advance by the show. The challenges should be more evenly matched. Which makes for a more interesting watching.

it seems that when someone gets a lot of screen time they seem to be the one who gets voted out. poor chicken man. that was a dumb move on the tribes part i think. also every year i wonder have these people NEVER watched a survivor show??

woo hoo on your new site HD :)

I enjoyed the episode last night because it reminded me of an experience I had one time. Other than that, it was pretty boring.

I appreciate Leslie, James, and Aaron and can respect Todd's play too. Going into it I liked Erik, but noticed they didn't really show much of him last night. I really don't like PG, Courtney, or Jean-Robert and am on the fence about Ashley.

I hope that they'll give us something exciting soon!

CanFan said:

I pretty much agree with what everyone else has said. The first show is always kinda boring because there are so many players and they each get so little airtime. Once it gets whittled down to a smaller number, it'll get more interesting. I, too, thought that Frosti, the parkour (?) athlete would kick ass in that comp, but James really stood out.

I always do a ranking after I read the bios and before I see the first episode and I gave Frosti the highest ranking, followed by James and PG. Now that I have seen them on tv, oh, well, I was right about 2 out of 3!

Julia W said:

I've been a Survivor fan since the get go--the beginning of each season is always the most interesting for me since there are so many different personalities to watch.

So far I like James, Todd, Aaron and Frosti. Courtney needs to go back to New York ASAP since she obviously likes it so much better than her Survivor experience.

My favorite moment of this show was when Jeff Probst snuffed out Chicken's torch and said, "The tribe has spoken." To which Chicken replied, "I heard 'em." LOL.

Hi HD. I'm another transplant from your BB8 blog and I'm so glad you are doing this.

I love the grave digger. Quiet dignity. I hated the Christian Lady after the temple thing (another Jameeka) but I like her again because of her approaching him and talking to him and trying to help him. And the flight attendant is cheek-pinching cute!

Chicken was stupid (bad social game) and needed to go. Can't stand the lady wrestler and the NY waitress needs to be introduced to Daniele and both of them sent off to an Exile Island for about 5 years.

The thing that pissed me off the most was when they gave them the shoes. I agree with the previous poster who asked if they had never seen the show before?!?!? Anyone stupid enough to show up in the gear they had on deserved to have to wear it even if it was heavy enough to sink a ship. This is supposed to be Survivor, not Pampered Quests.

cre8tivewmn said:

Haven't these people ever seen survivor? You show up for the meeting with Jeff in the clothes you want to live with for the duration!

This episode was rather boring and predictable. Nobody shows up ready to work (or be outside, it appears). I'm getting kinda tired of that.

Chicken apparently knew that the 20-somethings always vote out the older "bossy" people, but he should have given his opinion when asked. It's amazing how resistant they are to working when the alternative is starving and sleeping in the rain!

Courtney was very annoying. Stay in New York, then! Maybe she should have started small, like a trip to a farm.

I'll cut Ashley some slack for being sick. I hope she improves next week though.

PG is an odd mix of crybaby and wannabe-leader. I think she'll manage to irritate everybody until she gets kicked off.

Leslie gets a minus from me for her temple experience but a plus for befriending James.

HD Thanks for the site! This is great! Nobody else at my house likes to talk about reality shows.

I was seriously disappointed in last night's episode. It was kind of boring and ho-hum...
I was very sad to see Chicken leave, I liked him instantly but that's the game, I guess. I agree that he should of stepped in that leader role, he would have earned more respect.

I do love me some JAMES!!!!!!! He is awesome and I can't wait to know more about him.

Even though Todd is going to annoy me, I like him too.

As a wrestling fan, I have to root for Ashley but I was very unhappy w/ her display last night. Hopefully, she'll rise from that become a force to be reckoned with!

Glad to continue on you w/ you HD...although, i am having some serious, serious BB withdrawal!!!

Tamara said:

I always (at least lately) find Survivor to start off slow and gradually build until you really do care by the merge.

Its weird, bc on Big Brother I can get invested in the show and characters Day 1, but Survivor takes me weeks.

The only reason I can think of as to why is that BB is on 3x week plus this year I watched Showtime AD so you get to know the people faster?

Anyway:
Courtney is ridiculous. Saying she isnt used to hanging out with these type of people.
Whats so bad about nice, pleasant and positive people?
She bragged that she was a "waitress from NY" as if that makes her better then the rest.

I hope she is around for a while for entertainment purposes but her personality sucks.

I think PG is most likely getting a bad rap as far as editing goes.
Yeah shes bossy, but someone needs to take charge, and shes a smart girl.
I dont think shes as bossy as CBS is editing her to be.

Leslie overreacted.
It was not a smart move to stand out so early on in the game.
She admits shes not religious, but then refuses to partake in the spiritual welcoming ceremony just bc there were Buddhas in the Temple.
Please.
If you are not that religious then why should this even be that big of a deal.
When in Rome.....
I think even JAMEKA would have obliged.

Funny how they described Todd as
"Gay, Mormon, Flight Attendant"

Wish we saw more of the lunchlady with the mullet. She could be funny. And she seemed like a nice person.

Other then that, I dont really even remember anyone else that clearly.

But I AM glad Chicken is gone.
He seemed annoying, and not too bright.

Lastly, on a sidenote, I notice this with Survivor more then any other reality show.
The typecasting.
Like Chicken was TOTALLY the Big Tom of this season.
I know all reality shows do it somewhat but Survivor always seems to do it most obviously.

Nigel said:

Yeah, pretty boring but what awesome scenery, its definitely on my must see list at some time in the future.

First off, I won a bet with my wife that the Christian talk show host wouldn't go through with the ceremony...so typical and it really pissed me off. The intolerance of other people's religions is really the only world issue today...that and my tribe is better than yours...aka...my ethnicity is better than yours. Every conflict on Earth comes down to those two issues. Not that this has much to do with Survivor but just venting.

The other bet I won was that Chicken would be first off...gave two suggestions that no one listened to and then pouted the rest of the time...see ya.

I'm sure as we watch more episodes there will be many more amusing moments and plenty of I can't stand that person quotes.

Thanks for keeping up on the shows HD.

Survivor won the timeslot, but was down about 12% from last fall in total viewers....which is going to be interesting once the other shows start up next week....

I thought the first show was a little slow as well. There are just too many people to keep track of. I personally thought Leslie's behavior at the temple did raise eyebrows at first, but I thought it was totally cool of her to take her stance. There are so many people in the world today that don't care about anything, and even though she knew it would probably make her stick out early, she went ahead and quietly stepped out of the ceremony. She's not the one who made a big deal about it; Jeff did. Anyway, I really am looking forward to seeing if the yellow team can get it together. Right now, it's red all the way! Go James!

Hi HD, I discovered your BB blog this season and loved it. I'm a huge Survivor fan so I'm looking forward to reading your blog here.

My favorites so far are Leslie and James. I like Leslie for the reason most of you don't like her: for standing up for her beliefs. That was a very religious feeling ceremony. She did say she isn't religious, she also said she has a relationship with Jesus Christ. Don't want to start a debate, just waned to point out all of what she said. As a Christian, I don't think I could have bowed in that temple either. I also liked the way she pulled James aside to talk to him and gave him tips on the social side of the game.

Looking forward to next week's show.

Dear HD,

I had a great time on your BB blog these past 3 months. :)

I watched the 1st episode of Survivor China.

Some of my impressions

1) Ashley - Attack of the Boobies! lol I like her.

2) Cocky waitress from NY - Don't remeber her name. She reminds me a bit of Danielle from BB8. I don't think she will survive long here.

3) James - Grave Digger. Sweet guy. I like him.

4) Chicken - Airhead. I couldn't make sense of what he was trying to achieve with that loopy behavior. It was no surprise that he got the Boot.

5) What was that 'sharp' talk between the poker player and that other skinny dude? What was tat all about?

6) Other people that I vaguely remember are that PGee chinese girl and that religious radio host lady. I hope she does not turn out to be a Jameka from BB8!

On the Whole, it was kinda boring. The only thing that may make me watch it is Ashley! :D

I'm a transplant from your BB board as well. Like I was over there I'm going to be the Devil's Advocate. On why people where unprepared when they had to go with just the clothes on theirs backs? They seemed to be traveling around China, something they have never done before on other seasons, and just hanging out before "the show" actually started and I don't think that they knew this was the day they would leave. I also feel that was why this episode seemed boring. They spent quite a bit of time with that, the travel footage, so that the game itself started late in the episode and we got less of it. All other seasons have started right as soon as the show starts. I was disappointed they let them take their torches back and gave them flint. Is this Survivor Light where you don't have to earn it? Maybe the environment is just that harsh they need fire, I don't know.

Happy you're back HD. To a good season.

I am glad the Christian lady walked out of that temple. Christians worship no other gods outside of the Holy Trinity. Period. End of story. In spite of what Jeff said, that clearly was a religious ceremony. Did you see that monk slap the hands of the girl (I think it was the Danielle-like New York bony blond) who was not following protocol? I am sure that the Christian lady had no idea that she would be corralled into a temple to bow before graven images of pagan gods when she signed on to play Survivor. I'm sorry (not really) that she pissed off some people, including Jeff, by removing herself from that ceremony. She did exactly the right thing; good for her! Peer pressure be damned. Besides, who are viewers of the show to be so judgmental toward her? It is none of their business anyway.

After the first episode of each season of Survivor I always question whether or not I'll watch the continued adventures, because the first 2-3 are sooooooo boring. But I always stick in there and finally get attached. This cast is purely awful. Sure hope that the strategy of all these players is to not show any personality at first. We need a Johnny Fairplay type, you know, Dick's cousin!

I've had a huge project on at work and just caught up with SR Survivor.

Y'all have covered the first show so I'll not go there, except to say I'm sooo over the NY waitress who made an ass of herself in the temple. At least the Christian lady had convictions, the waitress was just a bored brat without any respect for the culture.

I have a MAJOR GRIPE with the cancellation of "Survivor Live", does anyone else miss it? IMHO SL, like House Calls, is half the fun. Bad move CBS. The post-eviction interviews were a valuable insight into game play and relationships.

My first thoughts? OMG, is Courtney related to Dani or what? Young, skinny, blond, self-centered complainer. UGH, please, not again! (I sincerely hope it was a first mis-impression, but I have this terrible feeling it wasn't)

I too found it somewhat boring. I was also sorta shocked when the losing yellow tribe was just awarded fire! I have to wonder if there weren't some repercussions from the conditions/situation of the last show...

I haven't decided who my faves are yet. I usually like to feel them out over several shows first. There aren't any real stand-outs to me like there have been in previous shows, although, I like James and Dave so far.
